Georgia Writers Museum (GWM) proudly announces that novelist Steven Cooper will be its “Meet the Author” presenter next month with his latest mystery: Desert Remains: A Gus Parker and Alex Mills Novel. The Sept. 12 event at GWM in Eatonton will also feature heavy hors d'oeuvres and a full bar. Following his presentation, Cooper will be signing copies of his books.

In Desert Remains, Detective Alex Mills is tasked with solving a series of baffling murders. A deranged killer is leaving his victims' bodies with taunting clues in the desert surrounding Phoenix, Ariz. It’s the work of a madman who, in a taunting ritual, is leaving behind a record of his crimes etched into the stone. With no leads and no suspects, Mills sees a case spinning out of control.

City leaders want the case solved yesterday, and another detective wants to elbow Mills out of the way.

As the body count rises, Mills eventually turns to Gus Parker, an “intuitive medium,” whose murky visions sometimes point to real clues. It's an unorthodox approach, but Mills is getting desperate.

Cooper is the author of six novels, including his most recent mystery series featuring psychic Parker and homicide detective Mills. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called the series “first-rate entertainment.”

A former broadcaster specializing in crime and investigative journalism, Cooper has won multiple Emmy Awards and nominations, as well as a national Edward R. Murrow award and numerous honors from the Associated Press.

He previously taught college-level writing and communication courses at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., and at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. Cooper’s work also has appeared in numerous publications, including Writers Digest, The Strand Magazine, and Jungle Red Writers.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Cooper has lived a bit like a nomad, working TV gigs in New England, Arizona, and Florida, and following stories around the globe.

However, since 2013, he has lived in Georgia. The GWM Meet the Author event with Stephen Cooper begins at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.)

Tuesday, Sept. 12, with admission $45 ($40 each for two more tickets) or $200 for a table of six (a $40 savings). Visit GWM online at georgiawritersmuseum.org to register and to pre-order a copy of Desert Remains – but be prepared to sleep with the lights on after you read his chilling story.
